Budcapping at Biskey Ponds Ski Trail-October 17th, 2010
Our budcapping crew

In areas that are not fenced in, the best way to protect white pines from being chomped by deer in the Fall/Winter/Early Spring is to bud cap them.  The terminal bud on each tree gets a paper covering.  This is ideally a process that is done until the trees grow taller than the deer can reach.  This project only requires a decent stapler, paper and staples.  There are thousands of existing trees in that area that need capping every year.  Most of them are from natural regeneration after past logging but each year the number increases with the ski clubs plantings.  Our club helped plant over a thousand seedlings in the spring of 2009 in this area.
